In recent years, the global food industry has witnessed a notable shift. While plant-based diets gained significant traction, recent trends indicate a resurgence in animal-based product consumption. This change is evident in the declining sales of meat substitutes and the rising popularity of protein-rich animal snacks.

Companies like Wilde Brands have capitalized on this trend by introducing products such as chicken-based chips. Founded in 2018 by Jason Wright, Wilde aimed to create nutritionally dense and crunchy snacks. Despite initial challenges during a peak in plant-based popularity, the company recently secured $20 million in funding, expanded its product line to seven flavors, and established a presence in over 20,000 U.S. retail locations, with plans to enter the European market.

Conversely, the plant-based meat sector faces challenges. Beyond Meat, once a market leader, has experienced a significant decline in stock value, with a 98% drop from its 2019 peak. Similarly, Pret A Manger closed or rebranded its Veggie Pret stores due to underperformance. Market research indicates a global decrease in plant-based meat sales, with a 16.8% drop in chilled alternatives between 2022 and 2023, and a further 21% decline in both chilled and frozen alternatives from 2023 to 2024.

In contrast, consumption of traditional meats—beef, poultry, pork, and fish—has reached record highs. Approximately 350 million tons of meat are consumed annually worldwide, double the amount from three decades ago. Projections suggest this figure could rise to 570 million tons annually.

This shift away from plant-based alternatives towards animal-based products reflects evolving consumer preferences, influenced by factors such as health considerations, skepticism towards processed foods, and changing dietary trends.

The resurgence of animal-based products is also evident in the emergence of innovative snacks and supplements. Products like beef isolate powders, cacao collagen drinks derived from bone broth, and egg white protein powders are gaining popularity among health-conscious consumers seeking nutrient-dense options. This trend signifies a broader movement towards traditional diets rich in animal-based nutrients.

While plant-based diets once dominated the discourse on healthy eating, there is a clear and growing shift back toward animal-based products. This change is driven by consumer demand for authentic, nutrient-rich foods and a desire to move away from highly processed alternatives.
